Overview

This epic walk across the Khumbu region offers incredible views of the world’s tallest peaks and a true adventure through lush valleys and high-altitude terrain. The hike showcases Sherpa culture and stunning Himalayan views at Gokyo Lakes and Everest Base Camp.

Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Kathmandu and transfer to hotel.

Upon arrival at Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport, you’ll be greeted warmly by our guide and staff with traditional Nepali hospitality. They will assist you with your luggage before taking you on a short drive to your hotel. After some time to refresh and settle in, you’ll participate in a group briefing led by your guide. This session will cover important trek details, accommodations, and an introduction to local culture, including key do’s and don’ts to keep in mind. In the evening, you’ll be treated to a welcome dinner at a traditional Nepali restaurant, featuring a vibrant folk cultural program that highlights Nepal’s rich heritage.

Day 2Tour of Kathmandu heritage sites of great interest.

After breakfast, your city and cultural guide will meet you at the hotel to begin an engaging tour of Kathmandu’s key attractions. Your first stop will be the historic Durbar Square which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site teeming with vibrant activity and showcasing Nepalese culture through its ancient monuments and courtyards. From there you will visit the Swayambhunath Stupa which is a 2,600-year-old Buddhist sanctuary perched on a hilltop that offers stunning panoramic views of the city.

You will visit the sacred Hindu temple of Pashupatinath which is a significant spiritual site, followed by the Bouddhanath Stupa which is famously referred to as "Little Tibet." This stupa is among the largest in the world and is decorated with Buddha’s all-seeing eyes and serves as a serene haven for reflection. After this productive day of exploration, you will return to the hotel to make final preparations for your trekking.

Day 3Fly to Lukla 2, 846 m and trek to Phakding 2,645 m. 

In the morning, you will take a flight from Kathmandu's domestic terminal to Lukla. Take a short flight on a small plane and enjoy amazing views of the Himalayan mountains, including Mt. Everest, before landing at Lukla’s airport. From Lukla, start your trek with a downhill walk into the Dudh Koshi River valley. Along the way, pass through beautiful Sherpa villages with colorful prayer flags, Buddhist monuments, and stone prayer walls. You will end the day by hiking in Phakding village, where you’ll spend the night.

Day 4Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m / 11, 350 feet.

After breakfast, start your trek to Namche Bazaar. The trek passes through the small village of Benkar, followed by a long suspension bridge that leads to Monjo village, the entrance to Sagarmatha National Park. After completing the park entry formalities you will cross another bridge and continue to Jorsalle which is the last village before Namche, where you’ll stop for lunch.

In the afternoon, follow the river trail before climbing a steep and winding path through green forests. You will cross one final high suspension bridge, then continue a steady climb until you reach Namche Bazaar. Once you reach there settle into a cozy lodge with beautiful views of the Kwangde and Thamserku peaks for an overnight stay.

Day 5 Stay at Namche Bazaar for acclimatization and a short scenic hike.

Today is a rest day in Namche to help you adjust to the altitude, with a short hike planned for the morning. Start with a walk to the high ridge above Namche, where you’ll enjoy stunning views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and other towering peaks. You can also visit the nearby park museum to learn more about the Khumbu region and its culture.

If you’re feeling energetic, take a steeper hike to the Everest View Hotel, sitting at 3,880 meters, which offers amazing views of Mt. Everest. In the afternoon, unwind or explore the lively streets of Namche Bazaar, filled with shops, cafes, and great restaurants.

Day 6Trek to Dole 4,110 m.

From Namche, you’ll hike along scenic high trails for a few hours before branching off from the main path. The trail then climbs steeply for about an hour, taking you to the ridge at Mong Hill. This spot is perfect for a break, offering incredible views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks and a handful of small tea houses and shops to rest at.

After enjoying the scenery, you’ll descend to the Dudh Koshi River and arrive at Phortse Tenga, a peaceful riverside area surrounded by forests, where you’ll stop for lunch. In the afternoon, the trail leads uphill through the forest. After a few hours, the landscape opens up, and you’ll reach Dole, a quiet little village with cozy lodges where you’ll stay for the night.

Day 7Trek to Machhermo 4, 470 m.

Today’s trek is a short journey to Machhermo. You’ll start with a brief but steep climb out of the gorge, then follow the trail across an open and exposed landscape. Along the way, you’ll pass the ridge above Luza, a traditional little village, and continue on a path that runs above the Dudh Koshi River. Eventually, you’ll arrive at Machhermo, where stunning views of Mount Cho-Oyu await you.

The trail then takes you down into a shaded river gorge, lined with willow and poplar trees, before one final gentle climb to Machhermo. You’ll have lunch here and settle into one of the cozy lodges with beautiful views of Machhermo Peak. In the afternoon, take a rest or go for a short walk to explore the area.

Day 8 Trek to Gokyo Lake 4,800 m.

Today’s trek is a short yet incredibly rewarding journey to one of the highlights of the trip, Gokyo Lake. The day starts with a steep but brief climb, leading to a viewpoint that offers stunning panoramas of the surrounding mountains. From there, the trail follows a ridgeline toward Panga.

As you leave Panga, the path winds through small forests before trekking up to the first of the Gokyo Lakes. The trail continues on a gentle incline, taking you past the second lake and finally to the breathtaking third Gokyo Lake. This is where the lodges are perched above the shimmering shoreline, offering jaw-dropping views of Mount Cho-Oyu towering to the north.

Once you’ve settled into your lodge, enjoy a relaxed afternoon. You can either unwind by the lake or take a short walk to explore its beautiful surroundings.

Day 9At Gokyo climb of Gokyo-Ri, rest of the afternoon free at leisure.

Enjoy a scenic and memorable day at Gokyo. Start early with a challenging but rewarding hike up Gokyo Ri, which takes about two hours of steep climbing from the south side of the lake. Once you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted with incredible views of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho-Oyu, and countless other peaks. From the top, you’ll also get a bird’s-eye view of the stunning Gokyo Valley, its turquoise lakes, and the massive Ngozumpa Glacier.

After taking in the breathtaking scenery, make your way back down to Gokyo for a hearty breakfast. Spend the rest of the day at your own pace and enjoy lunch, relax by the lake, or explore the area’s natural beauty.

Day 10Trek to Thagnak- 4,760 m.

After enjoying the stunning scenery of Gokyo, start your day with a pleasant morning walk toward the end of the Gokyo Valley. The trail takes you past the beautiful third, second, and first lakes, eventually arriving at Na, a small settlement with a few tea houses. From there, the path continues on a gentle route below the towering Ngozumpa Glacier, leading to Thagnak, your stop for the night, nestled at the foot of the Cho-La Pass.

Spend the afternoon relaxing and getting ready for the challenging day to the top of Cho-La Pass the next morning.

Day 11Cross Cho-La pass 5,420 m trek to Dzongla 4,750 m-08 hrs.

Start the morning as early as possible, bringing a packed lunch to fuel the long and challenging day ahead. Follow your lead guide as the trail ascends rocky slopes with several steep sections, eventually bringing you to the top of Cho-La Pass. Tucked away and surrounded by dramatic peaks like Cholatse, the pass offers breathtaking views of Nirekha and Lobuche.

After taking a well-deserved break at the summit, begin your journey down the eastern side of the Khumbu Valley, making your way to Dzongla for an overnight stay. This quiet little settlement, located off the main trekking route, boasts stunning views of the Cholatse peaks and a nearby glacial pond.

Day 12Trek to Lobuche 4,960 m.

From Dzongla, enjoy a short trek to Lobuche. After about an hour, you’ll connect with the main trail heading toward Everest Base Camp. Once on the main path, the route gently climbs towards Lobuche, where you’ll stay overnight in one of its cozy lodges.

Lobuche is nestled at the western edge of a wide valley and offers several comfortable lodges with spectacular views of the towering Nuptse Peak.

Day 13Trek to Everest Base Camp 5,364 m and back to Gorakshep. 

Start early with a nice walk that includes a few short, steep climbs. The trail flattens out before leading over rocky terrain along the edge of the Khumbu Glacier. You’ll reach Gorakshep and then continue on a rocky trail toward Everest Base Camp.

Surrounded by ice and towering peaks, you’ll enjoy incredible views, though Everest itself is hidden behind Lhotse and Nuptse. After spending time exploring and taking in the scenery, return to Gorakshep for the night. It’s a long, adventurous day near the famous Khumbu Icefall.

Day 14Climb Kalapathar 5,643 m and trek to Pheriche 4,260 m 06 hrs.

Start early with a steep hike up to Kalapathar, the highest point of your trek. From the top, you’ll be treated to stunning panoramic views of Mt. Pumori and up-close views of Mt. Everest. After taking in the breathtaking scenery, head back down to Gorakshep for breakfast.

From Gorakshep, continue walking downhill, passing through Lobuche and Thugla, until you reach the peaceful Pheriche Valley. Once there, settle into a lodge with beautiful views of Taboche, Cholatse, and Ama Dablam. Pheriche is also home to a Himalayan Rescue Association (HRA) post, which you can visit nearby.

Day 15Trek to Thyangboche 3,867 m.

Start your day by walking down from Pheriche to a river, then climbing up to a ridge topped with a beautiful stupa. From there, continue to the village of Pangboche, where you’ll stop for lunch while enjoying incredible views of Ama Dablam.

After lunch, cross a bridge and make your way uphill to Thyangboche, where you’ll spend the night. This charming spot is home to a famous monastery and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Everest and the surrounding peaks.

Day 16Trek to Monjo 2,860 m via Namche Bazaar.

Begin your morning in Thyangboche, enjoying the stunning views of the snow-capped peaks. From there, head downhill to the Imjatse River, cross a bridge, and take a short uphill walk to the junction where the trails to Gokyo and Namche meet.

After a scenic walk through the village of Shanasa, arrive at Namche Bazaar, where you can stop for lunch if time allows. Then, continue your journey downhill to the Dudh Koshi River before a gradual climb to the Sagarmatha National Park entry post. Wrap up the day with an overnight stay in the peaceful village of Monjo.

Day 17Trek to Lukla 2, 846 m.

On your final day, start with a pleasant morning walk, including a gentle stretch leading to Phakding. From there, follow the familiar trail back to Lukla. Once you arrive, enjoy lunch and take some time to relax or explore the town. Spend your last evening in Lukla, reflecting on your trek and preparing for your journey home.

Day 18Fly from Lukla to Kathmandu with afternoon free at leisure.

After breakfast, take a short walk to the airport in Lukla for your flight back to Kathmandu. Upon arrival, transfer to your hotel and enjoy the rest of the day at leisure for shopping or relaxation.

Day 19Free day as contingency and for individual activities.

Day 19 is a backup day in case of flight delays or cancellations from Lukla due to weather. If there are no delays, enjoy a free day in Kathmandu. You can relax or visit nearby places like Patan and Bhaktapur to explore more of the local culture.

Day 20International departure for homeward bound.

After breakfast, your guide will take you to the airport for your international flight. Say goodbye to your team and head home with amazing memories of your Gokyo and Everest Base Camp adventure.

The flight to Lukla and back to Kathmandu, where flight can be delayed or might get postponed for next morning. Due to unfavorable weather conditions around mountainous region of Himalayas, can happen sometimes even in best time of the season.       Best Seasons

      The best seasons for Gokyo & Everest Base Camp Trekking are in spring and autumn/fall however one can visit nearly all year round, except for the wet monsoon time of July and August. The main flow and high season are spring starting from March to May, where days are longer with enough sun-light hours. The right season is when wildflowers are in seasonal bloom, especially the rhododendron of various species from tall trees to shorter bushes.Morning and late afternoon till night time is cold from 3,000 m above, chances of light rain and snow-fall sometimes.The next best season is autumn/fall, the high time for trekking around the Himalayas. Most days are crystal clear for scenic walks and best views, but short days due to sun-light hours. Can be much colder from late afternoon till the next morning before the sun hits the area. Chances of snow-fall sometimes from
      3,000 m high.

      What to Expect

      Nepal is a country of the world’s highest mountain range known as the Himalayas, where 80 % of landscapes are covered by hills. As well as greater ridges and mountains, where one can expect walking ups and downhill.The only flat land of the country is located south, which extends from the Far East to the Far West of Nepal. The low land is known as the Terai belt, of sub-tropical climate, the country with most mid and high hills.The people around the hills, especially around the high Khumbu, Gokyo and Everest region populated by the highlanders of the Himalayas.The Sherpa of Everest, interwoven with Buddhism religions and heritage culture, is similar to their Tibetan predecessors.
